The Janet Squeeze continues

It looks like Napolitano's bad luck streak is continuing. Apparently if she wants to ease into John McCain's senate seat, she will have to fight him for it.

I continue to assert that Janet is not the hot commodity she was even a year ago. I expect her to to take even more hits as she tries to play her usual budget games with an electorate, who by increasing a majority of conservative legislators, seems to indicate a shortening patience for it.

I would rather see Janet Napolitano remain the governor and go on to run for the Senate in 2010. If she has to run against McCain, she will give him a run for his money, to be sure. I wouldn't bet on it one way or the other, it is just too early. Anything could happen in two years.

Napolitano is more likely to end up in the Obama administration, I'm afraid. Regardless of what conservatives think of her, she is that rare public servant who successfully climbs the political ladder and does not forget that she is still a public servant. Obama obviously thinks highly of her, so she's probably going.

BTW, Framer, I'm glad that you switched to black print on white.

Dropped by to take a look see and say hello.

It will be interesting to see if Janet calls for a special session to address the budget problem she created or tries to wait it out and leave it at the front door of Jan Brewer, on her way to Washington. It was clear before it was even passed to anyone with part of a brain that her budget was not sustainable. It was at best wishful thinking on her part.

How, exactly, is a budget created by the Legislative branch laid at the feet of the Governor?

The gov does provide a budget framework to the Legislature. However, the budget then is hashed out by Legislators throughout the Legislative session. The legislature then passes it along to the gov, who gets a chance to veto if she wishes. Even if she does veto, it could be overridden.

I concede this over-simplifies, and the gov certainly has influence on the bill the Legislature creates, via the veto-threat. However, ultimate responsibility for creation and passage of a budget bill lies in the Legislative, not Executive branch.

Of course, you know this already .. doesn't seem to stop you from ... um ... "mis-labeling" the issuem

As to the original post ... I'd prefer to see Janet stay until 2010 as well, and then run against McCain. I do think McCain would be a slight favorite if the race were held now .. but in two years, who knows? As Liza said, a lot can happen.

On the other hand, the last news I saw seemed to hint Janet was expected to accept a spot in the Obama cabinet if offered.

It should all shake out next week either way.
